Goals:
This course is designed to provide support and enrichment in English language and literature skills. Outcomes for students are as follows:
- Expanding vocabulary through speaking, reading and writing
- Improving grammatical and idiomatic use of English (oral/written)
- Expanding critical and analytical skills /improving reading skills
- Developing self-assessment and self-correction skills
- Speaking only English in-class
- Working well within learning teams
- Timely arrival and being ready to work
- Asking for the help she/he needs it
Course Content:
The course emphasizes both oral and written and reading English skills. Activities may include any of the following: public speaking, discussions, interviews, plays, skits, oral -reports, phonetics,grammar, independent reading and a variety of writing activities such as paragraphs, stories and essays. Teaching will be tailored to the specific and often differing learning needs of the students in the course.
In addition to the assignments within this class, a half an hour per day shall be provided for homework and support for language-based work from other classes (English/Socials etc.). This class acts as ongoing language skills support.
Expectations:
- English shall be spoken in this class. Daily oral participation is an aspect of the grade.
- Attendance- students must arrive on time and ready to participate. If a class is missed, it is the responsibility of the student to catch up in a timely fashion. See me the day you return to find out what you missed. 5% is deducted for each day an assignment is late.
- Phones- At the start of each class (unless otherwise directed) shall be deposited in the class 'phone box'. Students may collect their phones at the end of the class/work period or with the permission from the teacher (when needed for a class activity)
- Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Students will receive zero and will be subject to discipline according to school policy. Please see school agenda for policy. - Learning Readiness- means that in addition to timely arrival, students have had enough sleep, proper nutrition, and arrive with all the tools needed for class including an open and curious mind, paper and pen/computer, and books.

Reading/viewing/Listening/note-taking/participation
Writing/speaking/presenting/assignments
Marks for each report:
Test-weight
work 45%
Quiz-
weight work 35%
Homework 20%
Total: 100%
Each term is equally weighted and worth one third of the total mark for the course.
